FAQ
Nha Trang visa run: questions and answers
Short, honest answers about borders, visas and how the day works.
What is a visa run?
A visa run is a short trip out of Vietnam and back in across a land border, so that you can enter again on a new visa or a new visa-exempt stay. It is a normal international exit and a normal new entry. Nothing about it is automatic: the border officer decides on entry each time.
Which border is closest to Nha Trang?
Neither is close. Bo Y, on the Lao border north-west of Kon Tum, is about 480 km away (8–9 hours each way). Moc Bai, on the Cambodian border west of Ho Chi Minh City, is about 500 km away (7–8 hours each way on the expressway). Both routes use an overnight coach: leave Nha Trang at 21:30, cross the border in the morning and be back around 22:00 the next day.
Should I go to Cambodia or Laos?
It depends on your passport. At Bavet (Cambodia) you can use a Cambodia e-visa, which we arrange before the trip, and most nationalities can also buy a visa on arrival. At Phou Keua (Laos) there is no visa on arrival and the Lao e-visa is not accepted, so the Laos route suits passports that are visa-exempt for Laos, such as Russian, South Korean, Japanese and ASEAN passports, or travellers with a Lao visa arranged before the trip, which we can do for you. Send us your nationality and we'll recommend one.
Can I use a Vietnam e-visa at Moc Bai and Bo Y?
Yes. Both Moc Bai (Tay Ninh) and Bo Y are on the official list of border gates where foreigners can enter Vietnam with an e-visa, published on evisa.gov.vn. Your e-visa must name the gate you will use.
Can you guarantee I will be allowed back into Vietnam?
No. Nobody outside the Vietnamese authorities can. We organise the trip, explain the procedure and check your paperwork with you before departure, but the decision to admit you is made by the border officer when you arrive. Be wary of anyone who promises otherwise.
Can I extend my visa instead of doing a visa run?
Sometimes. It depends on your visa type and whether an organisation can sponsor the extension. Many tourist e-visas cannot be extended inside Vietnam, and then a visa run is the practical option. Send us a photo of your current visa page and we will tell you honestly which applies. See e-visa and extension.
How do I travel to the border?
By coach, with a seat for each traveller, for VND 1,300,000 per person round trip. You meet the coach at its office in Nha Trang (we send the address when you book), travel overnight to Moc Bai or Bo Y, and our team follows your e-visa by WhatsApp throughout the trip.
Can I fly out instead?
Yes. Cam Ranh International Airport, about 35 km south of Nha Trang, is on the e-visa list and has direct flights to several Asian cities. Because the land borders are so far away, a short return flight can be a sensible alternative. Ask us and we will compare it with the land run for your dates.
